Veronica Garreton Galen is a Senior Designer at Lighting Design Alliance and an Adjunct Professor at University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. Her AR599 course introduces lighting design concepts by topical lectures, site visits and a semester-long, hands-on case study. She is pleased to announce that four of her lighting design students were selected as the finalists for the inaugural year of the Saul M. Goldin Memorial Scholarship, with Anyin Ye selected as the ultimate winner. The team at Lighting Design Alliance commits themselves to lighting education through presentations to IES chapters nationwide, DLF, USGBC, and international conferences and has found great reward and talent in the next generation of lighting designers while teaching at local universities and as summer interns.

Incorporating LEDs Without Getting Burned

NeoCon 2011 at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago from June 13 - 15

Get a crash course on LED products and arm yourself with knowledge. As LED technology changes from week to week, you’ll be able to ask reps and manufacturers the right questions to keep yourself up to speed. Discuss lighting issues including binning, heat syncs, color temperature, color shift, controls, testing, and sustainability. Get a basic understanding of the components of a LED system including control options, and then learn to recognize opportunities for LED lighting in your own projects. Also, make sure you know how to discern when LED lighting is right and when other traditional lighting is appropriate for your architectural or sustainable goals.

2010 Cooper Lighting Source Awards Competition Honors the Herman Miller Showroom in Los Angles, CA

Lighting Design Alliance Awarded Honorable Mention Sustainability Award in the Commercial Category

When Herman Miller sought a flagship showroom in Los Angeles, a former warehouse caught the company’s attention. With the help of the company’s design and construction team, this 28,000-square-foot renovation became the first LEED Commercial Interiors Platinum project in Los Angeles. Because Herman Miller’s products are used in many environments, the initial design directive was that the space should be a clean, modern environment with an incandescent, “residential” feel. In addition, it was to be
implemented as a low-cost, energy-efficient system. The showroom itself is divided into many different vignettes, including offices with modular workstations, classrooms, meeting rooms, and residential environments. Lighting is the unifying element.

The building’s energy performance was a key factor in obtaining the highest level of LEED certification. The lighting system incorporates high-efficacy fixtures, infrared occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting. After completing a lengthy commissioning process, the facility operates at 0.69 watts per square foot, which performs 41 percent better than the ASHRAE minimum requirements.

LED lighting is everywhere; and retailers and retail designers are getting LED pitches every day. Does LED lighting make sense?

Archit Jain, Principal at Lighting Design Alliance, presented on this topic at GlobalShop 2011 in Las Vegas on 30 March 2011

Cutting through the hype and jargon of LED technology can be exhausting and confusing. This presentation brings designers to the inner world of LEDs to address what are the true applications in retail lighting and how to evaluate the plethora of LED product offerings. The seminar discusses the benefits and shortcomings of this ever-expanding technology and provides distinct parameters to evaluate and compare LED products. What is the role and what are the limitations of controls with LEDs? What color are they...really? How do LEDs fit in my retail environment—should I be using them? What is the future? These questions and many more are discussed with non-brand-specific product comparisons with sample "equivalent LEDs," real-world examples of price and lifecycle cost, discussion of different LED track, recessed, signage and case lighting with the important points to know when working with them.

The Lighting Design Alliance office provides a real world example of the effectiveness of sustainable design, operating at only 0.1W per sq. ft, where the stringent CA Title 24 Energy Code allots 1.2W per sq. ft. Looking forward, architects and designers will need to have an arsenal of creative solutions for energy savings, and this case study presents and evaluates more than 10 installed real world applications, while redefining the perception of a commercial office for the future.

Learning Objectives
•Identify lighting and daylighting integration opportunities in their own projects' early design stages.
•Identify strategies for lighting/daylighting performance and evaluate those strategies in relation to energy consumption and conservation including LEED credits.
•Recognize the benefits of occupancy sensors, lighting control presets, daylight sensors, systems integration, and dimming controls, in managing and evaluating energy while maximizing available daylight.
•Compare and assess the effectiveness and limitations of LED, CFL, Fluorescent, metal halide, and incandescent lamp technology as they relate to the future of sustainable design and energy codes.

LEED Credential Maintenance Program Course offered by Lighting Design Alliance

The Lighting Design Alliance office provides a real world example of the effectiveness of sustainable design, operating at only 0.1W per sq. ft, where the stringent CA Title 24 Energy Code allots 1.2W per sq. ft. Looking forward, architects and designers will need to have an arsenal of creative solutions for energy savings, and this case study presents and evaluates more than 10 installed real world applications, while redefining the perception of a commercial office for the future. This presentation will walk you through the renovation of an office/manufacturing building and its goal of achieving a design meeting LEED Platinum standards, including more than 10 unique lighting and daylighting solutions. Then the presentation describes a more advanced Healthcare project (Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi) which uses innovative lighting and shading to achieve LEED certification while maintaining patient comfort.

Learning Objectives:
•List methods on how to enhance energy performance in a building.
•Recognize which credits can be achieved in building renovation.
•Utilize and customize daylighting techniques and products to fit their projects' needs.
•Describe how lighting controls can modify energy consumption and ensure comfort and productivity.

As consultants to Cole Haan, Lighting Design Alliance developed many lighting solutions in coordination with Callison for the successful hi-end retail stores. LDA created a specialized partnership with Cole Haan to expand the retailer reach from an elaborate flagship store on New York's Madison Avenue to budget and energy conscience outlet stores across the United States. Cole Haan is now thinking overseas, expanding to the world market, with LDA tailoring lighting design to match.

"After rolling out stores across the United States over the past eight years, the luxury clothing and accessories retailer Cole Haan has begun extending its reach around the world. Shortly after the domestic stores began to open, it launched a series of stores in Asia, and now it’s making its mark in the Middle East. While the number of store locations keeps growing, one thing remains the same—a distinct brand identity that clearly shines through every retail environment from Madison Avenue to the Dubai Mall, where the newest Cole Haan store recently opened." Excerpt from "Contract Design: True to Form: Callison Designs a New Cole Haan Store in Dubai"
