The Lighting Design Alliance office provides a real world example of the effectiveness of sustainable design, operating at only 0.1W per sq. ft, where the stringent CA Title 24 Energy Code allots 1.2W per sq. ft. Looking forward, architects and designers will need to have an arsenal of creative solutions for energy savings, and this case study presents and evaluates many options in the real world, while redefining the perception of a commercial office for the future.

Learning Objectives:
● Identify lighting and daylighting integration opportunities in their own projects’ early design stages.
● Identify strategies for lighting/daylighting performance and evaluate those strategies in relation to energy consumption and conservation, including LEED credits.
● cognize the benefits of occupancy sensors, lighting control presets, daylight sensors, systems integration, and dimming controls in managing and evaluating energy while maximizing available daylight.
● Compare and assess the effectiveness and limitations of LED, CFL, fluorescent, metal halide, and incandescent lamp technology as they relate to the future of sustainable design and energy codes.

Building Rehab And Urban Renewal: The Role Of “Identity Tech”, Color And Kinetic Lighting

Lighting Design Alliance manager Laura Román to present educational seminar at NeoCon 2010 in Chicago

A “hidden” new design tool for architects and lighting designers are the applications of color and programmable kinetic lighting together with the use of high-tech LEDs and fiber optics. Examine case studies of projects by a collaborative team of architects and lighting designers. See how these applications work well for both urban renewal and building rehab projects. Get effective guidelines about the separate roles and responsibilities of architects, designers and engineers. Learn to identify components of buildings and areas that lend themselves to the use of “identity-tech” lighting.

Speakers:
● Laura Roman, IES, Associate AIA, IALD, LEED AP, is senior lighting designer and manager for Lighting Design Alliance in Chicago, Ill.
● Dr. Rada Doytcheva, ALA, LEED AP, is principal and head of design for RADA Architects LTD in Chicago, Ill.
● Avraham Mor, AIA, LEED AP, IES, IALD, is senior lighting designer and partner at LIGHTSWITCH Architectural in Tower Lakes, Ill.

10 Days with a Lightmeter: A Light Level Journal

Lighting Design Alliance principals Archit Jain and Scott Hatton to present educational seminar at Lightfair 2010 in Las Vegas

Light level calculations and photometric studies are an essential part of the lighting design profession. But how do these studies relate to our everyday experiences with light? What do the common IES design levels of 1, 5, and 30 footcandles really feel like? In an attempt to gain a more intuitive understanding of footcandles, we spent 10 days and nights with a lightmeter at our sides 24/7. We took light level readings at various times of day in many different locations, and kept an “illuminance journal” to note our impressions. Join us we share our insightful (and sometimes comical) observations.

• Gain an intuitive sense of light levels. What does a certain light level feel like in various situations?
• We are often asked if there will be enough light. Can we define enough?
• How do perceived lighting levels change with environment and locale?
• Can we make do with less light than is typically recommended? Can we use less light, feel comfortable and promote sustainability? Appreciate the human eye.

The future of the lighting design industry is undergoing dynamic changes as a result of increased environmental consciousness throughout the world. Effects of LEED sustainable building design and increasingly strict energy codes (California’s Title 24 and ASHRAE) combined with the fact that a staggering 25% of all building energy is used on lighting have brought sustainable lighting to the forefront of energy efficient building design.
Lighting Design Alliance is proud to announce that the majority of our design staff have now passed the USGBC LEED® Accredited Professionals exam. LDA team members are now fully trained to positively impact not only the lighting systems on a LEED® construction process, but can also assist and implement our understanding of all environmentally sustainable building systems from conception to completion. With the rising popularity of LEED® certified projects in most market sectors, the LDA staff realizes the impact that LEED® influenced projects have in how we will construct projects for the future and that is why we have certified over two-thirds of our staff with LEED® AP qualifications.

LEED® is an internationally recognized certification system that measures how well a building or community performs across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED® provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
The University of California San Diego's Price Center East, a collaboration between Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design and Lighting Design Alliance, wins Honor Award at American Institute of Architects San Diego 2009 Design Awards. The AIA San Diego Honor Award celebrates extraordinary architectural design worthy of the profession's highest regard.

The UCSD Price Center Expansion added more than 170,000 square feet to the existing student center facilities, providing new spaces for retail, dining, meetings, performance events, student organizations, and other campus services. Merhdad Yazdani’s addition to the UCSD Price Student Center consists of two square tube buildings intersecting a central 3D trapezoid. Offices and function spaces are located in the tubes, while the large trapezoid is comprised of a grand atrium, open study space, and dining facilities.

As exterior illumination was limited by a dark sky ordinance, the intent was that the building would glow from within. To help differentiate the building components cool white sources were used in the tube portions of the building while warm sources illuminated the 3D trapezoid. Within the building, grids of lines and circles were utilized to accentuate the flow of the building’s structure. Indirect lighting (with diffuse covers to avoid glare) was used in the large atrium to highlight the volume and provide comfortable light levels. With the university’s sustainability objectives set high, the Price Student Center meets LEED Silver standards. The resulting space has a lively and stimulating environment with an urban aesthetic.

The Skinny (on) Retail Lighting Design

Chip Israel and Archit Jain presented this seminar at Lightfair 2009 on May 7, 2009 in New York.

As codes become more and more strict and retailers are looking at ways to save energy for lower costs and for projecting a responsible image, changes need to be made to the lighting scheme as well.

How can this new skinner version of retail lighting be achieved? The seminar will discuss the basics of retail lighting design and delve into specifics to attain design goals keeping in view low energy use requirements. Aesthetics, budgets and long term maintenance will be discussed using case studies as examples. New and relevant lighting technologies, including the applicability of low wattage ceramic metal halide lamps, fluorescent sources, LED and HIR halogen would be evaluated. Payback and ROI will also be discussed when existing stores are retrofitted with new energy efficient lighting. Aesthetics is key—well designed energy efficient lighting does not have to be cold and glaring.

Learning Objectives:

Provide the participants with basics of retail lighting design including lighting hierarchy and sources.

Getting the old “warm” look with new more energy efficient sources. Existing store characters can be maintained with new sources—we just have to be a little creative.

Using new sources (MH, CFL, LED) to replace traditional (incandescent) ones –what’s the ROI?
