Williams-Sonoma Group, encompassing Pottery Barn, West Elm, Threads, and Williams-Sonoma stores, is in pursuit of greater sustainability for all existing and future stores. The challenge was to reproduce the existing incandescent, “residential feel” lighting with a low cost and energy efficient system. Intensive mockups with various manufacturers’ lamps and combinations of MH, CFL and halogen lamps were conducted to evaluate warmth and color rendering. The end solution relied on 20-watt CMH lamps with warming reflectors and 30-watt IR halogen MR16 lamps to highlight the red spectrum. Existing trackheads were reused while also reducing quantity.
Track locations are minimized, lowering costs, and trackheads are aimed low to reduce glare. Wall displays are lit to 100fc and freestanding displays to 70fc. Approximately 10:1 contrast ratios are maintained in the stores.
