After decades of use, the historic Von Kármán Auditorium at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, was finally showing its age. Used daily for tours, lectures and broadcast news conferences, the lighting systems in the auditorium had come under scrutiny: they were outdated and inefficient. Lighting Design Alliance worked with the attraction design and fabrication team at Cinnabar, and Director of Photography Jeff Ravitz to completely re-light the auditorium using the newest technology available.

With a limited budget and compressed schedule, the team was able to adhere to JPL’s directive to use only LED sources for broadcast lighting and illuminating the spacecraft models on display. Color changing and warm white LEDs were utilized to illuminate the spacecraft models, and color-balanced LED Fresnels and profile spots were used for broadcast lighting. A scalable lighting control system was used to entirely eliminate the need for dimming, and guarantee flexibility for the next few decades of space missions this auditorium will see.
