The San Jose-based headquaters of eBay required the renovation of 5 existing buildings and new construction of 6 buildings resulting in over 2 million square feet of masterplan. Automatic dimming system detects the amount of natural light coming in from the outside and adjusts the electric light accordingly, resulting in an estimated 40% energy savings. Additionally, fluorescent and compact fluorescent sources concealed in architectural details or decorative fixtures provide energy efficient indirect ambient lighting.
As of 2009, the entire campus is pursuing LEED Silver Certification rating for its efforts to meet standards for environmentally sustainable construction. In effort to increase overall building energy efficiency, interior lights serve a secondary purpose by also illuminating the building facades via clear glass windows. A LEED Innovation and Design Credit point was awarded for exclusive use of recently-developed fluorescent lamps with low mercury content. This design statement has a large impact on environmental future as The United States Clean Air Act, passed in 1990, put mercury on a list of toxic pollutants that need to be controlled to the greatest possible extent.
